    Intelligent Interactive Multimedia by Converging the Intention of Spectator and Multimedia Creator

    In this research, we propose a new approach on how human and technology interact with each other. Here, by enhancing the current HCI framework, it will enable interaction between human and technology become more effective and ideally. The aim of this research is to create an Intelligent Interactive Multimedia by converging the intention of spectator and multimedia creator. Several methods are proposed to achieve the conception of Intelligent Interactive Multimedia. Digital Drawing Block is the interactive multimedia with the initial intention of multimedia creator and it forms an interaction with spectator. Spectator intention has been categorized into four common categories, additionally, five features of hand gesture recognition is proposed to deduce the spectator intention. All these five features will be captured by the web-cam during the spectator’s interaction with the Digital Drawing Block. Moreover, captured features will be sent to the machine learning for analyzing. Proposed user models are to assist the machine learning to evaluate the most appropriate category of human behaviour which matches the spectator actual intention. Lastly, graphic that represents spectator intention will be generated together with the initial intention of multimedia creator. The new creation from spectator and multimedia creator will be displayed through the Digital Drawing Block. The conception of Intelligent Interactive Multimedia can represent as 70%'s effort of Multimedia Creator + 30%'s effort of spectator

    WiMAX: Performance Analysis and Enhancement of Real-time Bandwidth Request

    This paper carried out a study on the bandwidth request for real-time polling services. In our study, we discovered that although the base station granted the subscriber station an allocation to send the bandwidth request, the subscriber station may not be able to allocate the bandwidth request to the allocation. It is due to processing delay and multicast polling in the subscriber station, which results the bandwidth request being padded unintentionally. The loss of bandwidth requests will cause the degradation of the real-time polling service performance. Therefore, we propose a scheme to overcome this problem. The results of the experiment show that the proposed scheme improves the performance of real-time polling services

    Six N-nitroaryl-2-amino-1,3-dichloropropane derivatives have been prepared and evaluated against 18 cancer cell lines and two non-cancerous cell lines. Analysis of cell viability data and IC50 values indicated that the presence of a trifluoromethyl group in the nitroaryl moiety is an important structural feature associated with the compounds’ cytotoxicities

    Jerantinine A induces tumor-specific cell death through modulation of splicing factor 3b subunit 1 (SF3B1)

    Precursor mRNA (pre-mRNA) splicing is catalyzed by a large ribonucleoprotein complex known as the spliceosome. Numerous studies have indicated that aberrant splicing patterns or mutations in spliceosome components, including the splicing factor 3b subunit 1 (SF3B1), are associated with hallmark cancer phenotypes. This has led to the identification and development of small molecules with spliceosome-modulating activity as potential anticancer agents. Jerantinine A (JA) is a novel indole alkaloid which displays potent anti-proliferative activities against human cancer cell lines by inhibiting tubulin polymerization and inducing G2/M cell cycle arrest. Using a combined pooled-genome wide shRNA library screen and global proteomic profiling, we showed that JA targets the spliceosome by up-regulating SF3B1 and SF3B3 protein in breast cancer cells. Notably, JA induced significant tumor-specific cell death and a significant increase in unspliced pre-mRNAs. In contrast, depletion of endogenous SF3B1 abrogated the apoptotic effects, but not the G2/M cell cycle arrest induced by JA. Further analyses showed that JA stabilizes endogenous SF3B1 protein in breast cancer cells and induced dissociation of the protein from the nucleosome complex. Together, these results demonstrate that JA exerts its antitumor activity by targeting SF3B1 and SF3B3 in addition to its reported targeting of tubulin polymerization

    Rapamycin synergizes cisplatin sensitivity in basal-like breast cancer cells through up-regulation of p73.

    Recent gene expression profiling studies have identified five breast cancer subtypes, of which the basal-like subtype is the most aggressive. Basal-like breast cancer poses serious clinical challenges as there are currently no targeted therapies available to treat it. Although there is increasing evidence that these tumors possess specific sensitivity to cisplatin, its success is often compromised due to its dose-limiting nephrotoxicity and the development of drug resistance. To overcome this limitation, our goal was to maximize the benefits associated with cisplatin therapy through drug combination strategies. Using a validated kinase inhibitor library, we showed that inhibition of the mTOR, TGFβRI, NFκB, PI3K/AKT, and MAPK pathways sensitized basal-like MDA-MB-468 cells to cisplatin treatment. Further analysis demonstrated that the combination of the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin and cisplatin generated significant drug synergism in basal-like MDA-MB-468, MDA-MB-231, and HCC1937 cells but not in luminal-like T47D or MCF-7 cells. We further showed that the synergistic effect of rapamycin plus cisplatin on basal-like breast cancer cells was mediated through the induction of p73. Depletion of endogenous p73 in basal-like cells abolished these synergistic effects. In conclusion, combination therapy with mTOR inhibitors and cisplatin may be a useful therapeutic strategy in the treatment of basal-like breast cancers

    Predicting user actions in kinect using simple Markov assumption

    This paper proposed a combination of gesture recognition system using Kinect camera and user's action prediction using a Markov model that makes use of user's pattern of action sequences. Prediction of future action will help the user speed up while doing a task and potentially avoid an error. The system will record the user chain of command and created a transition probability matrix that will calculate the probability of a command appearing after a certain command is executed. The system has the advantage of no training needed and adaptable with the user habit after a certain amount of time. The proposed system was tested with Kinect using an Image Previewing program and proves to be working

    Facial expression analysis in e-learning systems - the problems and feasibility

    Despite increasing so called robust algorithms have been proposed, classifying facial expressions in real-time systems, especially in e-learning, is a different story and not an easy job. Some influential aspects such as machine and hardware limitation, environmental issues, and even suitable expressions (from students) categories for e-learning systems are often neglected. In this paper, we discuss extensively on these problematic yet neglected issues and study for the possible, existing methods to handle them for an e-learning system. For some special cases, we suggest for alternatives other than facial expressions analysis, which may help the system to perform better in terms of user modeling. The paper is concluded with suggestion for more advanced and feasible analysis of student's other behaviors (despite facial expressions) with the idea that no additional input device should be put on student's body, which can cause uneasy feel on them

    Adaptive Context Aware Attentive Interaction in Large Tiled Display

    We propose a conceptual model towards a context-based attentive interaction. Our focus is to improve the interaction between the user and the application of large tiled display by introducing user context and user attention. Interaction in our proposed system adapts user’s visual attention region with the user’s changing context based on head movement to achieve an immersive interaction with the tile display. Our experiment uses computer vision to track the user’s presence and projects the most attentive regions in a tiled display in high resolution. User will be able to see other regions in higher resolution according to the head movement. At the same time, user attention is captured and modeled to learn the attentive regions to be displayed for other users. This paper will show the experimental result of the effectiveness of the perceptual interaction in a large tiled display environment

    A survey of aesthetics-driven image recomposition

    The advancement of digital photography and the popularity of photo sharing social media such as Instagram and Facebook have undoubtedly stimulated growing interest in aesthetics quality improvement. One aspect of photography that contributes to high quality photos is image composition; the spatial arrangement of photo subjects in the image frame. Professional photographers often apply a wealth of photographic composition rules, e.g., rule of thirds, visual balance and simplicity to capture compelling photos. In the recent years, aesthetics-driven recomposition that attempts to computationally modify the composition of an image to mimic a professional photo has started to receive considerable research interest. Researchers have proposed numerous recomposition techniques that utilize a single or a combination of multiple image operators, i.e., cropping, warping and patch rearrangement operators, to modify the composition of an image. In this paper, we present a survey on the state-of-the-arts aesthetic-driven image recomposition. We define the image recomposition problem, outline its objectives, and provide a comprehensive review of the existing image recompositoin techniques, together with a detailed analysis of the effectiveness of each technique in achieving the recomposition objectives. This survey is intended as a good reference for researchers interested in image recomposition
